WitchFinder

WitchFinder by Ruth Warburton:
London. 1880. In the slums of Spitalfields apprentice blacksmith Luke is facing initiation into the Malleus Maleficorum, the fearsome brotherhood dedicated to hunting and killing witches.

Luke’s final test is to pick a name at random from the Book of Witches, a name he must track down and kill within a month, or face death himself. Luke knows that tonight will change his life forever. But when he picks out sixteen-year-old Rosa Greenwood, Luke has no idea that his task will be harder than he could ever imagine

My Review:

I was drawn into this rich historical fantasy. I truly enjoyed this more than I thought I would, considering the age group it was intended for and it is a slow start.

What I liked
The cover: It is absolutely stunning! The cover definitely drew me  to the novel.
The characters: They had a lot of heart and were well well developed. I enjoyed learning their stories. Rosa was a pretty strong character after her experiences.

Historical fiction with a touch of magic was a fascinating read! The descriptions about the era seemed very legitimate.

The plot was interesting.I thought it was unique how Luke could 'see' witches and wanted to get revenge for his parents' death. Also, it was interesting to see how Rosa's family dealt with their fall into poverty.  I thought the writing was great as well.

What I didn't like

Her brother was a jerk. Even reminiscent of the era, it was still hard to read.

The ending: I was surprised, about certain revelations. In retrospect, it actually makes a lot of sense. I don't want to speak too much about it as to ruin it :) Also,
it is an open ending which probably means continuation. That excites me as I would love to see some of my questions answered.

I think this is the perfect book for teens that enjoy historical fiction and stories about witches.

Disclosure: I received a free copy for review, as always this didn't affect my review. Thanks Netgalley!

Resilient - Review

Resilient is the story of two fascinating people. When Livia moves to her new town, she does not expect the mysteries and troubles that arise. All she is interested is figuring out who she is, her past and who her parents' are. Her adoptive parents don't seem to understand her and she wants to know the truth of her origins.

When she moves to this small town, she does not expect to find love or anyone like her. She does, however fall for Adam.

Adam is simultaneously interested in her. They may have more common than they realize.  Although there are plenty of differences. They are heading on an adventurous ride and do not get an explanation for way until the end. Both want to protect the other, which is consequences throughout the novel.

Cons:
Livia doesn't always talk about her feelings and takes time to open up to Adam. There were many times, I wanted to say, just tell him how you feel.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book! It ended with a cliffhanger :( I can't wait to find out what happens next!

4 stars!

Natural Birth Stories by Shannon Brown-Review and giveaway

My Review:

Natural Birth Stories is an incredible read ! I encourage women of all ages to read it. The aim of Natural Birth Stories is to empower and encourage women to give birth in a more natural. Or at least, to not be afraid of birth/ Often, women are shown only the dangerous side of birth, but Natural Birth Stories encompasses so much.

Shannon describes a natural birth as one without medication or medical intervention. Of course, there are situations when a natural birth is impossible. However, women should have a say in the process as being informed about birth is a human right.
There are various chapters describing different women's experiences at having a natural birth. Additionally, there are chapters on care providers, contractions, nutrition and exercise and how a birth plan

This book is very realistic. As well, it doesn't new/ expectant mothers at all. It is a very handy guide to have. Natural Birth Stories is very accessible and it is easy to look up what you want to read. I really enjoyed this book. I think all expectant mothers should read this. It is definitely worthy of 5 stars- Well written with no grammatical issues.

About the prizes: Who doesn't love prizes? You could win either of two $25 Amazon gift cards, an autographed copy of The Field by Tracy Richardson, or an autographed copy of its tour mate, Second Verse by Jennifer Walkup. Here's what you need to do...

  1. Enter the Rafflecopter contest
  2. Leave a comment on my blog

That's it! One random commenter during this tour will win a $25 gift card. Visit more blogs for more chances to win--the full list of participating bloggers can be found HERE. The other $25 gift card and the 3 autographed books will be given out via Rafflecopter. You can find the contest entry form linked below or on the official Luminis Duo tour page via Novel Publicity. Good luck!

About the book: Eric Horton finds himself plagued by terrible nightmares of explosions, fire, and someone screaming. The more they occur, the more real they seem, causing him to question whether they're just harmless dreams or foreshadowing of a dark and devastating future.

And that’s not the only strange thing happening. On the soccer field, he's been in the zone, saving shot after shot with what feels like a supernatural awareness of where the ball is going to go next. Then there's the connection he feels with Renee, the hot new student from France. It's as if he's known her forever.

Still, all these wild visions and synchronicities pale in comparison to the strange experiments Renee's dad is cooking up in the University physics lab. When he asks Eric to serve as a test subject, Eric must again question whether what he's seeing and hearing is reality—or something far beyond it.

When his best friend Will starts drinking way too much and Renee has eyes for other guys, Eric loses the edge he’s always had in the goal, and confidence in himself. If he’s going to pull it together, Eric must tap into a part of himself that he never knew existed, and that might just be the part that connects us all.

Pick up your copy of this Young Adult/ Paranormal/ Mystery through Amazon US, Amazon UK, or Barnes & Noble.

About the author: Tracy Richardson wasn’t always a writer, but she was always a reader. Her favorite book growing up was A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. In a weird way that book even shaped her life through odd synchronicities. She has a degree in Biology like Mrs. Murry and without realizing it she named her children Alex and Katie after Meg’s parents! Tracy uses her science background in her writing through her emphasis on environment issues and metaphysics. When she’s not writing you’ll find her doing any number of creative activities – painting furniture, knitting sweaters or cooking up something in the kitchen for her vegetarian, carnivore and no-carb family. She lives outside of Indianapolis with her husband and two children and their Jack Russell terrier, Ernie. Connect with Tracy on her website, Facebook, or GoodReads.

Luminis Books was launched in January, 2010 by husband and wife team Tracy Richardson and Chris Katsaropoulos with a mission to publish thought-provoking literary fiction for children and adults. My Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Written in a male perspective- it worked I was intrigued by the title The Field and all that could encompass.Going into the novel, I wasn't sure what to expect. A few questions ranged in my mind' What did the field mean? Did the book relate to the title?

One of my issues; The tense. It just isn't one of my favourites lol. But that is a personal preference. i was pleased that she (the author) kept the tense and pacing consistent. It made the novel an enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed reading Eric's perspective. I have been a fan of the male perspective since I have read the Giver (not a fan when I read it in Gr 7 - must re-read) and The Outsiders. It brings an intriguing freshness to the books I read. Also, I do think some authors do a great job of exploring the male mind. One of the only negatives, I felt that Eric's little brother seemed young for his age. Also, not all readers may have interest in this topic.

This book discusses several topics. I thought the idea of ESP, collective conscious and the 'field' to be quite interesting. I am happy to say, the title was explained and broadened. Additionally, The Field dealt with teenage issues in a realistic manner. I thought it was very similar to what teens go through. Teenagers fell in love, have parents' divorce and compete on sport times, this story was perfectly weaved in with Eric's experience. I am also glad to see teen alcoholism and friendship addressed.  These are very important concerns to be fleshed out and it is nice to see a book handle them effectively.

4 stars and I would love to read another book about Eric and this fascinating topic!

Nicolas Deschanel was betrayed by the only two people who matter to him. Their disloyalty stung and an overwhelming sense of loss lingers. Nicolas has lived the high life professing to not have a care in the world, and now this illusion is calling his bluff.

Determined to take control of an existence now devoid of purpose, he sojourns to his family's holiday home on the Gulf of Mexico. Resolved more than depressed, he plans to privately say goodbye to a world which no longer needs him. Of questionable fortune, he finds a woman, Mercy, sitting alone on the shore at eventide. My review :)
First off, I want to say thank you to Ms. Cradit for allowing me to review this book for free. this book is amazing. Sarah M. Cradit never disappoints.  The story of Mercy and Nichoas will blow you away. It is fascinating as you unravel the mystery of Mercy and Nicholas. It is an unexpected but awesome read! I was propelled into the story right away.  I needed to know what was happening with Mercy and Nicholas. Also, it was great reading about Oz, Ana and Finn.  The cliffhanging at the end just left me wanting more. Having read 2 others of Sarah's books, I feel this was the best one yet.

I give this 4.5 stars.

** I received a e-arc for free. This didn't sway my opinion of Illusions of Eventide at all :)

She is his weakness.
And she will ruin everything.

she stumbled through the mouth of the forest into a world beneath our
own, the world of the Semei.

Her only wish is to find her way
home but when Jamie, her best friend, is taken into this new world of

About the Author:

I grew up in a village called Swilland, in the countryside of Suffolk, England. There wasn't much around, other than farms and fields, but for the most part I loved it, and I still do. I’m a passionate person by nature. I don’t just LIKE things, I LOVE things. Whether it’s a book, a film, or a sports team. Once I decide to enjoy something, I enjoy it to the MAX.

I’m a terrible cook. I prioritise essential social media work over keeping my flat tidy, because I know best. I

Onto my love of reading and, consequently, writing - it was my dad that played a big role in encouraging me to read. He didn't push me towards books necessarily; he simply read a lot himself. Then I would pick up his books and read them after him. I was reading high and epic fantasy from a very young age. I guess that might explain why I have always loved adventure stories with magic and intrigue and princes and princesses in.

I was aware that I wanted to ‘be a writer’ from a very young age. I was convinced I would be the first best seller that hadn't reached double figures in age yet! I wrote about the Danshees, furry creatures that lived through a mirror. I wrote about a Sand Bottle that transported a boy into a world of magic. I wrote about a sick girl finding a music boy that healed her, but transported her back in time. (Wow, I always have loved alternate universes…)

When I was eight I wrote my first novel called The Land of No Return. Despite the title, I am determined to return to it one day. I feel like I owe it to my past self. So, as you can see, I have always been writing. There have been times when I have gone weeks without scratching down a word. Then there are days where I churn out multiple chapters and only my body’s silly desire for sleep and/or food can stop me.

I write because I enjoy it. I write fantasy because I enjoy it. I try my hardest to put something of myself into my writing. I like to think my characters have depth, I like to think that my fantasy worlds reflect upon the real world in some way. You guys will be the judge of that but even if you don't agree I know that I at least try and I can do no more than that.

These days I live in North London and I love it. I work full time and London is a hectic city. Juggling work, writing and a social life is tough but nobody is forcing me to do it so I can't complain. The dream is that writing will be my career one day but it doesn't matter if I never quite make it. I love writing too much to ever pack it in.

I am desperate to get a dog. My mum suspects I miss my cats at home more than I miss her. I am a devout Arsenal/Ferrari/Rafael Nadal fan. I get all mad when confronted with a case of social injustice and then I get all mad when people take the fight for social justice too far. I mostly keep those thoughts to myself and simmer with rage. I watch good TV and bad TV, because I can. What I can’t do is enjoy bad books (subjective opinion of course). I just can’t.

Excerpt

I stayed there for a long while, staring at the dark marble
countertop, the tiles inlaid with gold, until all of the voices quieted. When I
finally came out, Brendan was waiting for me in the bedroom.
“I’m sorry about this,” he said, indicating the windowless walls
around us. “As soon as the security updates are finished, we’ll be moving you to
Council.” I could see the idea bothered him more than it should, and the rest of
his explanation seemed to be more to convince himself than me. “It’s the best
place for you. To keep you safe.”
     I nodded.
“I had them bring up some lunch. It’s in the sitting room.”
My stomach turned. “Thanks. I’m not really hungry.”
He didn’t shift; he hadn’t taken his eyes off me at all. “If you’d
like to sleep for a—”
“No,” I interrupted. “No, I’m not tired.” I was exhausted—my muscles
ached, and my hands still shook—but I didn’t want to be alone.
He held out a hand. “Sit with me then?”
I walked past him toward the sitting room, and his hand fell to the
small of my back. I could have sat in the reading chair, but I didn’t. Instead,
I took the center of a small sofa where Brendan could settle beside me. His arm
came around me, and I curled my legs up, letting him tuck my back against his
side.
I shouldn’t have. I knew that. But Brendan cared about me, and it felt
good to have someone there.
I stared at the wall across from us, a beautiful Wyeth painting
centered over a narrow table. It was probably an original. And yet, I couldn’t
bring myself to appreciate it. They had been attacking Council ever since Morgan
was taken. We had thought it was in retaliation. We had thought they meant to
rescue Morgan. But we were wrong ... because they were after me.
I closed my eyes, trying to force a vision to come. It didn’t work
that way, but I wanted so badly to finally have this over with, to save my
sister and myself. To save everyone. I just needed a clue. One small indicator
of how, of what I was searching for in Emily, of what to do.
Brendan’s hand slid down my arm, and I became suddenly aware I’d sunk
into him. My elbow rested on his leg, my back against his chest. His cheek
brushed my hair, and I went rigid.
“Brianna,” he started, and I was on my feet, nowhere to go but the
table across from us.
I could almost feel his presence behind me. I picked up a vase,
examining the etched glass, and internally cringed. Nice, Brianna, run over to
look at glass.
“Brianna,” he said again, and the hurt in his tone was clear. I had to
say something. Do something.
I turned to face him. “I’m sorry.” He was too close. I sat the vase
back on the table, stepped one leg behind me. Two would have been too much. Two
would have injured him more. I looked into his eyes, so dark they were nearly
black, and said, “I like you, Brendan. I do.” Before I could finish, before I
could add, “but …” his phone rang.
He answered it. In the middle of our conversation.
After a brief exchange, he slid the cell phone back into his pocket.
His gaze found me. “I’m sorry, Brianna, but I have to take care of something.”
He glanced at his watch. “I hate to leave you alone, but Aern will be here
shortly. There are two men at the door, and the alarms are always on.” He
reached up to touch my shoulder. “We will talk soon.”
And then he smiled, clearly only taking the “I like you” from our
conversation, before walking out the door.
I stared at it for several minutes, open as it was, before finally
falling onto the couch and throwing an arm over my eyes.
I had bigger problems, I knew, so I started populating a list in my
head for when Aern arrived. I would do everything I could to resolve our issue. I had a lot of work to do before I could figure out where to start.
~Melissa Wright. Shifting Fate (from Chapter 2, Kindle Locations 204-245).
